04.07.19 Community Market

The Asian Pacific Health Foundation (APHF) partnered once again with Access Inc., a local career development and immigration agency that strives to address the needs of local underserved populations, to host another successful health fair on April 7th, 2019! The outreach was held at Community Market in Linda Vista (2612 Daniel Ave, San Diego 92111) from 9:00am - 2:00pm. The outreach site was conveniently located in a neighborhood, which allowed us to assist many individuals around the Linda Vista community. With the support from Access Inc., all of the registration forms were translated to Spanish. Due to the fact that the Community Market provided over 5 Spanish Interpreters to assist with translation and that 2 of our student volunteers can speak Spanish fluently, we were able to register over 30 patients for our comprehensive screenings (hepatitis B/C, hypertension, cholesterol, and diabetes)! In addition, all patients received liver fibrosis screening through the help of Dr. Gara who connected APHF to Justin and Florianne from Alliance Clinical Research.

The mission of APHF is to advance health and wellness for the vulnerable groups in San Diego and Imperial Counties by providing health education and free community health screenings for hepatitis B and C, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol disorders and osteoporosis at community centers. At this event, we were able to expand our services to the Hispanic community and diversify our demographics. This outreach also had the highest number of providers (4 PharmD, 1 MD) on record! Furthermore, we had the pleasure of speaking with Terrence Lee, a medical student from UCSD School of Medicine who visited the event to observe the operation of the outreach.

Our foundation would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to Daisy Alonso from Access Inc. for providing us an indoor space for our outreach and expressing an interest for a partnership with our foundation for future outreaches. We will be returning and providing our services to this community every other month.

Outreach and Volunteer Coordinators Megan Cheng, James Cordero, and Vivian Ngo led the outreach operations for set-up and equipment transportation. Their stellar leadership and training ensured an organized work flow for volunteers and staff.
